Gems #1

After a little convo with Curry I'm going with this perfect singles theme.

Lot of music out there. Lot of folks making it. More often than not they suck at it. Occasionally there is a flash of brilliance and the stars align. They nail it maybe just once. Those are gems. The artists may not ever approach it again, but they deserve some props for getting one song right at least once.

In another time maybe The Godfathers would have been more popular; maybe not. But the title cut from their debut is a template for getting it right. Snarling, angry, bitter and taking no prisoners, while still musically hooking you in a way even the best fail to do, Birth, School, Work, Death is a monster song that has few peers.

A title cut from Bay Area power-popsters obsessed with Eichler houses, who (at least for me) are virtually unlistenable except for this three and a half minutes of heaven from 2001. Part Yo La Tengo Sugarcube, part California sunshine, So Far is so good you wonder if it's even the same band.
